Lon Las Cymru 2026 rider

What’s the Best Bike for Lôn Las Cymru? Road, Gravel or Hybrid?

If you’re joining us for the Lôn Las Cymru or planning your own adventure, one of the most common questions is what type of bike to bring.

After running the route over the years, our honest answer is that there is no single perfect bike for Lôn Las Cymru. We have seen riders complete it on road bikes, gravel bikes, hybrids and touring bikes. What matters most is not having the fanciest setup, but choosing a bike that is comfortable, reliable and geared well for the route.

That said, bike choice matters a little more on Lôn Las Cymru than it does on some of our other routes. The route is known for mixing quiet roads, traffic-free paths and some rougher sections, so comfort, gearing and tyre clearance all deserve serious thought.

For most riders on our version of the route, we would usually recommend a gravel bike. A touring bike or lighter hybrid can also work really well, and some riders will still be happy on an endurance road bike depending on their setup and experience.

Is Lôn Las Cymru suitable for a road bike?

Yes, you can ride Lôn Las Cymru on a road bike, but it depends on your setup and expectations.

Some riders do complete the route on road bikes, especially if they are comfortable handling a bike on rougher surfaces and are happy to take things a little more carefully in places. This is not really a route where we would automatically say a road bike is the obvious best choice.

If you are thinking of using a road bike, an endurance road bike is usually a much better option than a more aggressive race bike. A slightly more relaxed riding position, sensible tyres and lower gearing will usually serve you far better over four hard days than a lightweight, race-focused setup.

As a guide, we would usually suggest tyres of at least 28mm if your bike allows. Ideally a little wider.

Not sure if your bike fits well or what tyres you can run?

It is well worth popping into your local bike shop to ask whether they can check your fit and tyre clearance.

A bike fit may not be cheap, but it can be worth every penny on a route like this. A small issue that feels manageable on a shorter ride can become a real problem once you are several days into a hilly multi-day trip. In general, we would suggest running the widest tyres your bike can comfortably fit to make the ride a little more forgiving.

Is a gravel bike a good choice for Lôn Las Cymru?

Yes, for many riders it is the best option.

Lôn Las Cymru follows National Cycle Network Route 8 and is a mix of quiet roads, traffic-free paths and rougher gravel sections. That makes a gravel bike a very natural fit for the route.

A gravel bike gives you a really good balance of comfort, control and climbing ability. Wider tyres can take the sting out of rougher surfaces, and gravel gearing often helps when the gradients start to bite. For a demanding 4-day version of the route like ours, that combination makes a lot of sense.

If you already have a gravel bike, there is every chance it could be the ideal bike for this trip.

Can you do Lôn Las Cymru on a hybrid or touring bike?

You can, and for some riders these are really strong options.

A hybrid can be a good choice for someone who prefers a more upright position or feels more confident on flat handlebars. The main thing we would say is that not all hybrids are equal. A lighter hybrid with sensible gearing can work very well. A heavier hybrid designed mainly for short local rides may make the climbing harder than it needs to be.

Touring bikes are also a very sensible option for Lôn Las Cymru. They are built for long-distance comfort, stability and reliability, and they tend to cope well with mixed surfaces. The trade-off is that they are usually a bit heavier and slower to accelerate. On a route like this that is often far less important than comfort and consistency.

If you are thinking of using a hybrid or touring bike, we would pay particular attention to gearing, weight and tyre choice.

Can you do Lôn Las Cymru on an e-bike?

Yes, you can.

An e-bike can be a really good option for riders who want extra support on the climbs or a little more confidence over a multi-day trip. The main things to think about are battery range, charging and the extra weight of the bike. What matters most when choosing a bike for Lôn Las Cymru?

From our experience, these are the biggest things to think about.

1. Gearing

This is probably the most important one. Lôn Las Cymru has a lot of climbing, and you will enjoy the trip far more if you have low enough gears to spin comfortably rather than grind your way up every hill.

2. Comfort

A bike that feels fine for two hours can feel very different by the end of day three. Comfort matters. Bike fit matters. Saddle comfort matters. A slightly more forgiving setup is often a smart choice.

3. Tyres

Tyre choice matters more here than it does on a pure road ride. You do not need huge tyres, but a little extra width can make a noticeable difference to comfort and confidence. For many riders, something in the middle ground works really well.

4. Reliability

Whatever bike you bring, it should be in good working order before the trip. A well-serviced bike you know and trust is usually a better choice than a brand-new bike you have barely ridden.

So what bike would we recommend?

If you are riding Lôn Las Cymru with us, our general advice would be:

Best overall choice: gravel bike

Also a very good option: touring bike or light hybrid with sensible gearing

Also possible: endurance road bike, especially with wider tyres and lower gearing

Less ideal: aggressive race bikes with tight tyre clearance, or very heavy bikes not suited to repeated long climbs

Because our trip is supported, you do not need to carry all of your own luggage on the bike. That means you can focus more on comfort and ride quality, rather than choosing a bike around heavy load-carrying.

That said, there is no single “right” bike for Lôn Las Cymru. Preparation matters far more than ticking a particular bike-category box.

Final thoughts

Over the years, we have seen riders succeed on a range of bikes on Lôn Las Cymru. The common factor is rarely the bike category itself. It is usually that the rider chose a bike that fit them well, was properly prepared, and was suitable for long, hilly days on mixed surfaces.

If you are unsure what to bring, we would usually suggest starting with the bike you already own and asking: is it comfortable, is it reliable, and does it have low enough gears and enough tyre for four hard days in Wales? If the answer is yes, you are probably on the right track.
